David Howell Profile Picture

Introduction

I am an adult student at Wintec's Centre for
Information Technology studying the Certificate in IT Level 5.

I have a background working in logstics, agriculture and the NZ Defence Force, which has equipped me with an array of soft skills that will make me a valuable asset for my future employer in the IT field.

Personal Objective

I am currently in my first semester of the Certificate in IT Level 5. On completion of this course I plan to enrol in the Bachelors Degree in IT in order to equip myself with the qualifications and skills to begin a career as an IT professional.

Skills

I have developed many soft skills in my work history and life experience that I am utilising to excel in my studies. My personal strengths include teamwork, discipline, self-management and attention to detail, which you can find described in more detail on my skills page. I am developing technical skills in HTML, Python, computer troubleshooting and database principles at Wintec.

Hobbies

When I'm not at work, I love to spend time playing music, exploring the outdoors and doing some amateur photography.

David Howell Guitar

Music

I have always loved music, my favourite genres being hard rock and metal. I learned keyboard from the age of 8 which gave me my music theory foundations, but I really became passionate about it when I took up drums at 13. This is my favourite instrument as well as guitar, which I began learning more recently.

I love the challenge of learning new songs and techniques, and this hobby is a great way to keep my mind busy when I am not studying or at work.

David Howell Outdoors

Outdoors

I am passionate about adventure and being in the outdoors, and I take any opportunity I can get to go hiking, mountain biking, kayaking or doing anything else that gets me into the fresh air.

In 2024 I crossed a long-time personal goal off my bucket-list when I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. It was an incredible way to experience the culture of a country so different to anywhere else that I have been, and pushing through the altitude sickness to reach the summit in sub-zero temperatures was a rewarding challenge to overcome.

Kea Avalanche Peak

Photography

I have had a lot of fun developing my amateur photography skills over the years, whether I am climbing a mountain, at work, or exploring a new city. This particular photo was snapped while climbing Avalanche Peak in Arthur's Pass National Park and is one of my favourite photos that I have taken in New Zealand.
